Archaeology, Education and Preservation

Education

The children need to know about the first doctors, lawyers, dentists, teachers, blacksmiths, and the inventors of the 19th and 20th centuries. All children need to walk into the homes and churches that the freedmen built.

Education is a crucial part of our mission. The Rutherford B. H. Museum currently offers guided tours of our buildings and exhibits to adults, youth groups, and children. We have also sponsored student internships and educational field work in archaeology and architecture in cooperation with local academic institutions such as Prairie View A&M, Lone Star College, and Houston Community College. In addition, our work with the Texas Historical Commission has resulted in state historic markers erected at our homes and other historic sites in Freedmen’s Town.

With your support we can expand our educational programs to include:
  • Preservation workshops
  • Historic construction demos
  • Panel discussions
  • Freedmen’s Town history classes
  • Archaeology field work
  • Art installations
  • Photography exhibits
  • Film showcases
  • Historian lectures
