Vision and Mission
We have an apparent vision and mission to help preserve, educate and explore the history of Freedmen’s Town Museums Houston, a part of Rutherford B.H. Yates Museum, Inc.
We are evolving. Our new brand development encompasses all of our museums, which is why The Freedmen’s Town Museums is plural. It incorporates our current achievements and the future of our organization. Our new name includes the Rutherford B. H. Yates Museum, which is open to the public for tours. However, to evolve, it is critical that we raise funds to expand our programs and preserve the other homes. We must also focus on our vision and mission to include the entire community.
Vision
To become a catalyst for cultural awakening and community engagement in and beyond the greater Houston area through the inspiring stories of formerly enslaved African Americans and collaboration with other entities committed to racial equity and advancing African American communities.
Mission
The mission of The Freedmen’s Town Museums Houston, a part of Rutherford B.H. Yates Museum, Inc. is to preserve the original homesteads of formerly enslaved African Americans in Houston’s Freedmen’s Town – opening the historic homes to the public, telling the stories of their inhabitants, and inspiring others by their courage in addressing racial inequities.
